There is no greater threat to public health, the economy, and the livelihood of all Ontarians than the threat of Climate Change. By cancelling the Cap and Trade system in place, Mr. Ford is betraying the future of the Province of Ontario.
The economy of the future is based on renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric cars, electric trains, and advanced and efficient manufacturing. None of this requires oil and gas subsidies, but all of these require cheap, abundant electricity, which renewables are capable of providing as technology matures. The push to developing this technology is pricing oil and gas, which is what the Cap and Trade system did. Instead of being a world-leader in the field of renewables and energy efficiency in order to future proof for the inevitable energy price increases, Ontario is going to fall behind. This means the people of Ontario will lose out on jobs in renewable energy, and feel the bad effects of increases in oil and gas prices. This will negatively affect Ontario business productivity as the cost of goods goes up, and we cannot compete due to inefficiencies.
Cancelling this now also leaves Ontario open to billions of dollars in lawsuits on cancelled contracts, and shows the world we are not interested in investments in renewable energy - a massively growing segment of the world economy. Again, Ontario will fall behind and will never recover as world leader.
It is irresponsible to cancel Cap and Trade, especially without a replacement policy in place. If the replacement were thought out, perhaps a discussion could be had about transitioning over to the new system. Follow the actual will of the people, and not what you imagine the people want.
You are betraying the people of Ontario, and ruining the next 50 years of Ontario's chance to thrive.
