An immediate, strong and effective climate change action plan is needed in Ontario. Cancelling the Cap and Trade program is setting Ontario on a backwards path. The billions that were taken into Ontario as a result of the carbon market with California and Quebec went directly to mitigations that gave businesses, public institutions ie. schoolboards, hospitals, municipalities and ordinary citizens the means to lower carbon emmissions and save money now and on an on-going basis with lower energy costs.
The GreenOn Fund was good for business as it created new jobs in addition to supporting energy cost savings for the many people who accessed it and were planning to in the near future. Cancelling it and it's funding source is a huge mistake economically.
I personally was able to afford to buy an electric car. Without the rebate program that would not have been possible. I continue to save money because I don't need to buy gas and the cost of electricty is less than one quarter of what I paid for gasoline. This is an example of "putting money into the little guy's pocket." Unlike the moronic "buck a beer" campaign, that benefits no one.
California's economy is thriving and growing; they have already met their Paris Committments and they are continuing on to a carbon neutral path that is a model for the world. Ontario was right there with them until everything fell off the tracks. Ontario needs a price on carbon and immediate, effective laws and policies to lower carbon emmissions to pre-1990's levels across all sectors. Time is running out.
