Cap-and-trade is not a ‘tax grab.’ The money the government received from it was directed back to the people of Ontario to improve our woeful impact on the environment. It enables citizens to improve their homes, and creates a lot of good-paying jobs: win-win.
Our basement, like many others, was flooded last spring, a result of ever-increasing climate change. Our insurance did not cover the damage, of course, resulting in an unexpected, very expensive renovation, which at least improved our energy footprint. As seniors, we were no longer able to do our planned renovation, replacing the five living room windows which are energy inefficient. We had hoped to apply to Green ON for help with the expense, but that project is on hold for the foreseeable future.
Ontario has the resources to lead the world in creating jobs in the green economy, while reducing the hundreds of thousands of yearly deaths due to air pollution. We have a small window of time to ensure our children and grandchildren live in a better world. Why would anyone want to prevent that?
