The pause in the implementation of this regulation is very concerning. As residents of a rural community which has recently become aware of possible contamination related to the dumping of excess soil, (cancer among residents), we understand that the gaps in this process are numerous and potentially harmful to the future health of communities. We have also become aware of the pressure placed on legislators by the Development industry. Contamination of soil has been a decades long practice and illegal dumping (and this includes massive ‘extra’ dumping in areas marked for smaller amounts) is rampant. This delay in protecting the health of citizens and wildlife in rural areas is unacceptable and continues to cause dismay and suspicion among those of us who are beginning to understand the subplot. Sadly, there aren’t enough of us to do more than create as much awareness as we can - and the fact that there is a lack of real research and proper testing to fully confirm the long term repercussions of this poisoning of people and the environment just allows the current situation to continue. Please do better —- or at least make the fact that you are pandering to big money less obvious. As we pointed out in our letter to our local Mayor and Council recently on this topic, we understand the need to ‘relocate’ excess soil - what we do not accept is the lack of real tracking and regulation of what is in that soil and where it is dumped. And using the excuse that people need more time to understand it? Ridiculous and unacceptable.
