I find this proposal a bit concerning, because it doesn't respect the ecological value of the specific area the government wants to remove from the Greenbelt. This is sensitive land that is critical habitat to species at risk, and can't just be replaced with land elsewhere and have no negative impacts. From what is provided on this website, the proposal is not science based. While the additional land suggestion is framed as a compromise, it should at least be made transparent if the new land gained is provides equal or greater value to the habitat being lost. Ford has vowed several times before not to touch the greenbelt after receiving backlash so I also don't like that he is trying to go back on that now.
There are other ways to expand housing that doesn't put critical habitat and critical farm land at unnecessary risk, especially when proposed Highway 413 is already demolishing other habitats and farm land. Why does more land being put at risk? Why is the government going back in it's word and actively working against the 2005 Greenbelt act?
