In the age of climate crisis, this short sighted bill puts Ontario's future in jeopardy. Where we could be a leader in developing sustainable, high-quality housing for Ontarians, we are instead focusing our efforts on building as many cheap, low-quality dwellings as possible, anywhere possible (situated in regions that we know are susceptible to future flooding, no less).
The Greenbelt is critical to the health of our region. The science bears this out. Opening the Greenbelt to development is not the right path forward for more housing--there is ample room for intensification in our existing urban communities.
If the Ontario Government is interested in building affordable housing, we know intensification costs less in the long run than suburban development. In almost every scenario, low-density development is an economic burden on cities (due to increased servicing costs). Why are we continuing to build this way?
I urge the Government to reconsider these Amendments to the Greenbelt Plan.
