I am completely against the plan to allow developers access to Greenbelt land when the current Ontario government has gone on record saying the Greenbelt will not be touched.
Instead, the government now justifies this proposal by xenophobia, using "immigrants" as an excuse when the first and single most impactful change to increasing housing would be to revisit current zoning laws that handcuffs the majority of Southern Ontario to single family units.
Revisiting zoning laws to allow for inclusionary zoning and empowering individual ownership the right to build, would move away from just allowing big developers this right. This would greatly increase midrises across the region and drive down demand for shoebox units within luxury condo towers. Re-adjusting policy should be the single most effective way at addressing issues of housing, not providing Doug Ford's developer relations to capitalize on environmental sensitive lands.
The current proposal also holds no consultation with actual environment scientists on the ecological damages that could ensue.
