The best policy instrument available to governments to reduce greenhouse gases is to put a price on carbon pollution. It's pretty obvious that a price on carbon pollution will result in people and companies looking for less expensive sources of energy. Pricing carbon in BC after about ten years has resulted in their economy outperforming the rest of Canada. It also reduced the province's GHG emissions as predicted. So Carbon Pricing works.
The way the funds are being used with the current Cap & Trade program is to provide incentives for better home insulation, solar panels, hydro dams, buying electric cars, and developing new low-energy technologies. Another option for what to do with revenue as is proposed by the Citizens Climate Lobby is to return all the money to tax payers. Neither of these options sounds like a tax grab. They both sound like sound policy.
Eliminating the Cap & Trade program has already had a negative impact on the Ontario economy in the form of the loss of the local contractor jobs like installing more efficient windows, that were supported by home energy retrofit programs that were funded by the Cap and Trade revenue.
Please reconsider this rash action that is bad for the economy and bad for the environment.
