Any attempt to develop the Green Belt is so misguided that it could be confused as intentionally obtuse. It is common knowledge how important these areas are from an ecological perspective.

Our focus should be redeveloping existing urban centers by increasing medium-density, mixed use residential and commercial. As it currently stands, our urban centers are unaffordable to all but the top 5% of the work force. Who's going to staff your local pizza joint making minimum wage if they can't afford to live anywhere near that job? What happens when we lose all of our sub-$100k/yr families to other provinces or countries?

in addition to building homes on the green belt, we would also have to extend infrastructure like roads, as well as other utilities into these areas. These extensions have massive upkeep costs for the next generation.

It is known that developing the Green Belt is harmful to the environment, including our coveted water shed, it provides a non-solution to actual working families who need to live where they work, and it incurs an extra infrastructure cost penalty that urban redevelopment does not face.

I fail to see the upside here.
