I do not support the proposed amendments to the Greenbelt Plan. The proposed amendments should be reconsidered. The proposed changes run contrary to the very purpose of the Greenbelt to prevent further loss of farmland and natural heritage, and restrict urban sprawl.
The proposed changes threaten the stability and certainty of the Greenbelt. Land swaps undermine the Greenbelt's permanency and set a bad precedent for future use of the land.
A strong Greenbelt ensures that Ontarians have access to clean air and water, local food and natural spaces. Protecting this land, supports strong rural and urban communities, protects Ontarians from increasing extreme weather events, mitigates the impact of climate change and provides access to nature for millions of residents and visitors.
Land is available, both inside the existing built-up areas and on undeveloped land outside greenbelts according to the Government's own Housing Task Force. Their report says that this available land hasn’t been used efficiently. The proposal will make life more expensive for people because they'll have to commute farther to get to work. It will be costly for municipalities because it's much more expensive to service sprawl. Ontarians should not have to pay higher taxes to support land speculators.
