I am all for building more affordable housing, but cutting down the Greenbelt is NOT the correct answer. The Greenbelt is a critical carbon sink and natural habitat and should be expanded, not sold to the highest bidder. "Adding different areas" to the Greenbelt does not make sense in terms of conservation; the destruction of existing habitats and the fragmentation of woodland and greenspace can have devastating ecological effects.
Do not try to push the blame onto the federal government and the number of immigrants. Increasing existing density, rezoning the cities to remove single-family housing, allowing more midrise construction; these are the solutions you should be looking for, not exacerbating sprawl into what precious little accessible green space we have left.
Doug Ford promised in 2018 to leave the Greenbelt intact and to not touch it due to public pushback: https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-election-2018/doug-ford-reverses-his… Four years later, this is still a wildly unpopular plan.
Why are you spitting on the promises you have made? Why does your word mean so little? Please listen to the people when we ask you to stop. Do not do this.
