Thank you for taking the time to read my submission.
I am extremely disappointed in the decision to cancel the Cap and Trade program. More-so, I am shocked at the speed at which the process is moving. I have personally witnessed the implications such swift cuts have caused to environmental programs supported by Cap and Trade and it is very irresponsible, not only in program uncertainty and reduced emissions but in job loss as well. The Wind Down programs offered by the government were complete cancellations of programs with very little notice. With so much money in limbo, it would make more sense to see the programs committed through, and not renew after the year. This would cause less frustration at contingency planning as well as potential (and real) job loss.
Additionally, removing Cap and Trade so soon after it's commencement undoes all the hard work and money spent to develop and implement the program, as it is too soon to identify if the process is working, so this seems like a waste of tax payer money.
Finally, an apparent interest of cancelling the Act seems to involve adding money back into tax payers pockets. This is a fair, potentially short term solution. Perhaps a compromised solution includes the removal of the gasoline and natural gas prices, while continuing to pursue business related emissions control.
I am interested in an alternative plan. Ontario has one of the highest emissions rate per GDP in the world, this needs to be curbed. The cost savings now will be worth nothing in the future when we see our infrastructure crumble at a faster rate, added black outs due to an increased strain on the grid, increased insurance rates and natural disaster etc.
I hope you will keep an open mind and create an alternative plan.
