Ontario's Greenbelt boundaries are being treated like moveable commodities, subject to the whims of government and the bottom lines of developers (if it were a protected mountain range we wouldn't even be having this discussion). This is unacceptable and undemocratic, given we have elected a Premier of the province based on his stated "hands off" approach. It appears as though promises made are not promises kept. Be that as it may, the notion of a "swap" does not take into account the long-standing ecological patterns established between green space and the wildlife that call it home. Patterns that exist due to keeping the precarious balance between nature and its animal inhabitants that has developed over many decades.
We have NOT run out of housing options. With some exceptions (downtown Toronto, central Mississauga, etc) the concept of sprawl has eclipsed density in housing development. Let's use the precious land that we have efficiently, by developing communities that are compactly centred around housing, schools, recreation and retail. In this way we can respect the balance between much needed housing and the beautiful land that surrounds us.
