The purpose of the Greenbelt is simple:

-Prevent further loss of farmland and natural heritage
-Restrict urban sprawl
-Work with the Growth Plan to develop vibrant communities where people can live, work, and play

Repurposing this land for development goes sets back so much progress in a time where protecting the environment and more sustainable urban growth is critical.

The fact that large developers have been systematically buying up land in the Greenbelt for the last few years also shows that this plan was in the works since the Ford government went into office. Coupled with a sneaky announcement (during CUPE negotiations), the Ford government shows that they know this deal to be unbeneficial to most citizens while some select "folks" stand to profit.
