Urban sprawl increases infrastructure costs (hydro, water, roads) and the needs to provide services to those spaces. Building a bunch of single family homes there means that tax revenue is lower; people have to travel further, increasing traffic everywhere. These single family homes will take more time to build fewer units and the costs upon the province will continue to compound.
Instead of growing into the greenbelt, upzone areas already in cities (or change zoning so that more than only single family homes can be built within the city). It doesn't need to be high-rises, it can be a 6 story or fewer, some with retail space on the ground floor. This style can increase tax revenue within the same footprint without having to expand out infrastructure and services.
There are better options than sprawling into the greenbelt, and we will feel the pain of this decision in the future, financially, economically, and environmentally.
