I feel this proposal is short-sighted and foolish. As much as the current populist conservative government may wish for a simpler world, the bottom-line is that the federal government mandates that a plan be adopted and should the province fail to act, the federal government will impose one upon us. Perhaps the Wynne government made many mistakes that Ontarians are angry about, but this wasn't one of them. Cap and trade is a reasonable proposal that allows businesses to keep moving while also following the "polluter pay" principle of fairness.
If we eliminate cap and trade and then fail to meet our carbon emission reduction targets, the federal government will be forced to increase the price on carbon across the board. This will have the overall effect of punishing everyone equally for the sins of a few massive polluters who blew up the overall emissions, regardless of any price on carbon because they were not subject to a cap. A government which claims to be "for the people" will ultimately be responsible for driving up the cost of absolutely everything in order to protect the bottom lines of a few large campaign donors who don't want to do their fair share.
