To be short, I do not agree with these amendments to the greenbelt. I am a 30-something Canadian citizen that currently rents property. Do I want an affordable home? Of course! Do I want it by sacrificing the Greenbelt? NO! Absolutely no! And I am not convinced that this plan will do anything to address the housing shortage. There is no reason to believe that the houses built on this developed property will be affordable. What legislation is being passed to force these developers to pass on the savings they will receive from getting rid of development taxes to home owners? Also, this bill will only add 50 000 homes. This can be accomplished in a much denser area in Urban spaces already zoned for development. In the Housing Affordability Task Force report, they clearly state that sprawl is unnecessary. That we need to built denser and we can build denser. Density is better for community and leads to better community carbon footprints. I would rather the housing affordability movement move in this direction.
I do not want to see the Greenbelt shrink. I do not think adding on to the Greenbelt in return for taking some away is sustainable. You cannot replace ecosystems and they are interchangeable. Please, respectfully and adamantly, do not let them touch the Greenbelt.
