Let's examine the undisputed facts. In the 2018 provincial election, the leader of the Conservative Party told Ontarions that if elected to government, his government would not open up protected lands in the Green Belt for development. At the same time, the very same Conservative leader was privately telling developers the exact opposite - that he would remove properties from the protected Green Belt so they could build. When this treachery was exposed through a published video, the leader of the Conservative Party backtracked and promised NOT to lift the protected designation on property in the Green Belt. In the recent 2022 provincial election, the Conservative leader again reiterated that if re-elected, his government would not lift the protected designation from Greenbelt properties. Mere months later, here we are. Such serial mendacity fundamentally undermines any purpose or value in this 'consultation'. Furthermore, the evidence is clear that the developers have bought their access and influence through large political donations to the Conservative Party now in government. In addition, the government has lied to Ontarians by claiming that lifting the protected status of these land parcels is necessary to address the housing crisis. The government knows that this is a total falsehood. There is plenty of land available for development outside the Green Belt. Furthermore, the government knows that this far-flung suburban expansion imposes a lifetime net negative cost on the municipality's taxpayers to subsidize the cost of extending services compared to the realized tax revenues from these new developments which only serve the wealthiest citizens, whereas policies to expedite urban intensification policies would build far more affordable housing which would be net positive in terms of taxation vs. increased cost of providing municipal services. The development of these Greenbelt properties is also entirely at cross-purposes with policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as these residential developments will be entirely dependent on automobile transportation. To add insult to injury, the Conservative government is also depriving municipalities of the development fees which at least contribute to the cost of installing municipal services. This is typical of the Conservative government - mislead, obfuscate and offload the negative consequences of bad policy onto municipalities. By removing the protected Greenbelt status on these select properties owned by Conservative cronies, the government has opened a pandora's box where other property owners can appeal for their properties to also be opened for profitable development. No wonder citizens are cynical given the evident corruption and disregard for policies that are based on evidence and solid planning principles.
