We must immediately stop developing and paving over the greenbelt if we want to continue to have access to clean water and food in this province. It will have huge negative impacts on public health, and is completely irresponsible towards the rest of the planet, as it will directly contribute to the climate apocalypse currently underway.
This bill does not benefit the people of Ontario, but the rich donors of the Conservative party. You just have to look at the route of the new highway they're going to build to see who's going to get a new expressway to their front doors.
A true home building bill would include multi family buildings, apartment buildings, co-ops, updates to include the widly popular Tiny House movement, repurposing land already developed for other uses, repurposing buildings already developed for other uses, increased protections for renters, increased options for renters, a real plan to house all of our neighbours experiencing homelessness, walkable cities, walkable neighbourhoods, a focus on people over cars, encouraging home gardens, local markets, and real communities.
Instead of destroying even more of the planet, you could address the crisis of empty condo units, which are being used by foreign investors to protect their money in places outside their home countires, and does not benefit the people of Ontario. You could address how perfectly good homes like the bungalows in East York are being demolished one by one to be replaced with much larger homes that do not house more people. Why are so many resources being used for so few people, especially when construction supplies are so hard to come by?
I went to university, worked as a project manager for a bank for 15 years, got my RRSP and RESPs for my kids, and still cannot afford to buy a house in this province. I cannot afford to move because rental prices have doubled in the time since I signed my lease, and I cannot afford to pay twice what I already do for housing. This bill as proposed would remove protections for me as a renter, and make it much more likely for me to lose my rental unit, leaving my kids and myself with few options. The shelter systems have collapsed and there's nowhere safe for people to sleep.
If the Conservatives are having so much trouble figuring out a safe and effective housing strategy, they need to defer to the people whose lives they will impact and possibly end with this proposed legislation.
