Please do not go through with this proposal. The Greenbelt hasn't even made it 20 years without being pillaged.
There are more ways to ensure housing for Ontarians.
Start having stricter guidelines for short term rentals AKA Air BnB and the like. This site, though convenient, is removing rental properties available and artificially inflating rental rates for local people looking for places to live. I've included a peer reviewed article showing the correlation between local people having less rental housing options and the increased amount of housing being listed on short term rental sites to participate in tourism and the negative effects this is having on people in Toronto.
In addition to increasing the Foreign tax rate on housing, also include penalties to corporations sitting on livable housing instead of acquiring tenants. This flood of rental housing would help bring rental costs down to a more sustainable level.
Keep infrastructure costs to the developer. Offloading these costs to municipalities is again, hurting the everyday Ontarian as their local tax rates will, or are already increasing.
Incentivize developers to renovate existing and empty commercial buildings for housing instead of leaving them empty.
The Greenbelt is the largest protected space in the world. I want to encourage other provinces and countries to prioritize our planet and protect it. We could be an instigator to greater positive change. I want to maintain being the province that cares about the environment, not one that is maintaining its colonial roots of destruction.
