I am opposed to opening the Greenbelt in order to "fast track" the building of homes. Although, yes, home are needed in Ontario, there is no direct correlation between opening Greenbelt / building xyz number of homes to conclude that building homes on the Greenbelt will have a net positive affect, or aid in, resolving the housing "crises".
There is also evidence that suggest “swapping" land, as proposed by the Government, provides no net benefits to the Greenbelt or to the environment. However, there is evidence that "swapping" land may provide adverse affects on the Greenbelt and environment.
There are several news sources that cover concerns with respect to opening the Greenbelt, as evidenced by sources below, that should be taken seriously, in consideration of something as drastic as opening the Greenbelt, and the concern given to the fact this could be seen as a gateway to further opening of the Greenbelt.
Lessons should be learned with respect to the negative affect of urban sprawl:
The unsustainable use of land expansion, the adverse affect of adding more roads, and highways;
Finally, First Nations we're not consulted and are expressing concerns with respect to waterways; hunting and fishing rights.
Certainly, Housing shortage should be taken seriously, but so should the adverse affects opening the Greenbelt will have on the Environment, Health and people’s Lives.
