The proposed plan to destroy portions of the Greenbelt is diametrically opposed to the premier's promise to the people of Ontario not to do so. The biologically sensitive lands that are suggested as those best suited for development were relatively recently purchased by interests whose focus is on new construction. There exists over 80,000 acres of land that is within current urban boundaries – not within the Greenbelt – that could easily be used to house the millions that are now the 'highest priority of the Ontario government'. The Greenbelt must only be expanded, never reduced in size, if we have any hope of preventing the catastrophes of lost biodiversity and human-hastened climate change.
