This proposal is disastrous in its reach, cynical in its execution, and intellectually bankrupt in its foundations.
The greenbelt is a valuable part of the joint inheritance of Ontarians. It provides us with clean water, food, and recreation.
There is a real need for more housing, but undermining our dwindling natural spaces close to our cities us the wrong approach. We need more density in every city and town. Single family zoning needs to be abolished, and brownfield development (on parking lots, infill in neighbourhoods, etc) is a significantly more responsible approach to development to than the vandalism proposed by the provincial government.
The process underway is also flawed. How was the land put forward for development selected? Where are the studies? Why remove power from conservation authorities to protect watersheds and discourage development in flood plains?
Simply put this is the wrong solution to a vital problem. Unfortunately our government seems to be acting from a mix of corruption and blind ideology to the detriment of all of Ontario.
