Hello,
I am submitting a comment regarding the proposed amendments to the Greenbelt under the More Homes Built Faster plan. I strongly urge the government to not go ahead with these amendments for they undermine the very purpose of the Greenbelt. This protection was not put in place to change at will, as it suits the government. The very purpose of the Greenbelt is to permanently protect natural lands, ecosystems, forests, waterways, and agricultural lands from development. These permanently protected areas are not something that should be altered or adjusted to suit the interests of the government as they see fit.
We are living in a climate crisis. If our future generations are to stand a chance of living in the homes the government plans to build under the More Homes Built Faster plan, then protect the natural areas that will protect our communities from risks of floods, food insecurity, and other environmental disasters in the future. These natural areas are protected for a reason, and once they are developed, there is no going back.
Please listen to your constituents. Please make decisions that are sustainable, and will continue to help us long-term. Building 50,000 homes on the Greenbelt does not promise affordable housing, which is actually what the people you serve require. This plan does promise a continued reliance on car transit and suburban sprawl. There are solutions: build on brownfields and empty lots that sprinkle urban centres across the Greater Golden Horseshoe; build up in municipalities that are equipped to handle high-rise buildings. This housing crisis requires long-term solutions. Removing the integrity of the Greenbelt is not a long-term solution, instead it threatens the natural ecosystems and farmlands we will need into the future. Please create a legacy future generations won't regret.
Thank you,
