Removing land from the Greenbelt and the Oak Ridges Moraine Is NOT RESPONSIBLE GROWTH, as you cite in your proposal. There are 86,500 acres of land already for development outside these protected areas, enough for the next 30 years of development. In addition, more homes can be built in urban areas by infill and intensification and in more rural areas by establishing 2 additional residences as requested in the Provincial Policy Statement.
The morality of what is being proposed is a reflection of the greed and 'old boys' club' of this government. Some developers bought this land just a few months ago and stand to make a great deal of money by building one family homes on the parcels. And to think that this is responsible development when it removes the costs for infrastructure from those developers will harm the citizenry now and in the long term. Taxes will have to go up to pay for the infrastructure that developers used to provide.
Urban sprawl was stopped by a previous government with a vision for the future, with a concern for life other than humans in southern Ontario, and hope for balanced development. These lands are some of the best, and our forests and wetlands which preserve our way of life and provide us with local food MUST be protected. There is no need to take any of this land for housing when developments could take place within already developed areas with amenities already available. The proposed lands will expand urban sprawl and increase the cost of housing for individuals for no reason. Our trust in our government to serve and protect is being destroyed .
Climate change is wreaking havoc already in the world, and we are being impacted. I watched my 80 year old trees bending in the storm yesterday and know that storms will increase in number and velocity in the next few years, raising costs to us all for repair and reclamation of lands and homes lost to floods and other natural disasters. I live by the Trent River and it is unpleasant to drink our water even after treatment. Our municipality needs money to replace its old infrastructure as do the big cities.
This is a dreadful proposal from a government for 1.5 million homes which neutral consultants are saying is impossible to achieve in a timely manner. The next government will surely stop this travesty, costing millions of dollars in fines etc., and your legacy will be that of corruption. Please do NOT proceed with this plan.
