We live in a world rapidly deteriorating due to climate change, pollution, poor land use, and biodiversity loss. Moreover, we've spent the last 100 years developing some of the best agricultural land in the world, destroying in the process, some of the most sensitive wetland in the country. Beyond the overtly criminal action regarding "insider trading" with respect to land sale, it is obscene to destroy what both CSIS and political ecologists (go figure) understand to be a space of national security interest. It is very much clear that climate change will force some billions of people to relocate in the coming decades, whether from sea level changes or severe heat/weather. The greenbelt represents a globally crucial ecosystem in the context of mitigating the worst effects of climate change and sustaining the future needs of mass migration. I note this not only as a citizen of Canada, resident of Ontario, but also as someone who acknowledges the role this country has and continues to play with respect to climate change. There is no price which can satisfy the national security protection that comes from the capacity to manage the sustainable future for the planet.
