I am categorically opposed to bill 23 and the proposed amendments to the Greenbelt Plan, Greenbelt Area boundary regulation (O. Reg. 59/05), and Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan (O. Reg. 140/02). First of all it was a Ford government campaign promise that they would not touch the greenbelt. Second of all bill 23 and the proposed amendments are doing NOTHING to actually make housing more affordable for Ontarians; it’s only going to worsen urban sprawl and the inevitable pollution and health issues that come with it. Thirdly, we need to be taking environmental protection seriously now more than ever with the imminent threat of climate change and this bill & proposed amendments are basically putting the health and safety of Ontarians at risk of climate events in the long run. What I would actually want to see is an investment in public infrastructure and institutions in the GTA and an increase of density. Most jobs and services are in the GTA and it makes no sense to build homes that will force people to commute for hours to get to work or access services. Towns in the greenbelt are not equipped to support this rapid development.
