This proposal is abhorrent. The GTA is covered in uninhabited condos (built and in construction). The real housing issue at hand is a lack of rent control and a lack of policies to support residents. What we have now is a pro-development, pro-foreign investment housing environment that values corporate gain and capitalist venture far beyond the security and wellbeing of ontarians. To consider destroying the little green space we have left for more corporate gain is disgusting. This policy demonstrates, yet again, a complete lack of consideration for anyone other than those who stand to gain financially from this plan - undoubtedly a select few who benefit from close proximity and shared personal financial interests with Ford and his administration.
Ford has yet again gone back on a commitment, the promise to protect and save the green belt. To say this is necessary in order to address the housing crisis is insulting. This government has completely ignored the needs of the unhoused and the under-housed. No efforts or sensible changes have been made whatsoever, in fact Ford himself is responsible for the removal of protective rent controls (on new buildings from 2018 and onward) in a bill that was designed to incentivize developers. Again, prioritizing profit and capital over people and residents. The lack of effort to manage the housing crisis is inexcusable. This bill would be a travesty and is in no way justified. This administration should be deeply ashamed.
