The proposed changes to development charges shift the burden onto taxpayers – whereas the already-very-rich developers are the ones who are laughing all the way to the bank.
What we need is a cap on developer profits – for example, a maximum of 10% per project. Any additional profit should be taken by taxes, plain and simple.
The land that Premier Ford wants to take out of the Greenbelt is land that already-very-wealthy developers have bought cheaply only because they had inside knowledge of what was coming. This is insider trading, and it is deceitful.
On top of all this, the proposed 50,000 houses that would be built on this Greenbelt land would only account for 3% of the promised 1.5 million houses. In fact, already 88,000 acres of land are available for housing, already fully approved. Obviously we should be building on those first.
The repealing of the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve Act is fundamentally wrong on so many levels. These were lands that were to be used for an airport (a federal jurisdiction) and then conservation easements were placed on them. It is unfair for rich, connected developers to buy up these lands at agricultural prices and simply lobby for the removal of these easements.
