I find it unacceptable to cancel cap and trade for the following reasons.
1. Businesses must pay for their carbon emissions which are a significant contributor to pollution and climate change. Contributing to climate change should be a concern to those of you that have children. Take some time to consider the recent UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report and the predicted impact on you and more importantly on your children’s future. It is predicting a pretty bleak future if drastic action is not taken to reduce greenhouse gases. Cap and trade is a major contributor to greenhouse gas reduction. See the CBC/Associated Press report titled UN report on global warming carries life-or-death warning.
2. The proposed replacement for cap and trade can only be described as “undetermined”; undetermined action, undetermined targets, an undetermined timeline, and most concerning, no consequences. This seems like a perfect recipe “For The People that own Big Polluting Businesses” and definitely “Not For the Majority of The People Living in Ontario”.
3. Cap and trade is extremely profitable for the province, specifically, proceeds for 2018-2019 are estimated to be $2billion. If the deficit is as catastrophic as the Conservatives suggest it is, how could the government be so irresponsible to consider forgoing that kind of revenue?
4. Dismantling a climate law that is working is bad for the environment and bad for the health of The People of Ontario. With respect to health, treating the impact of pollution costs the health care system millions. This should be a significant incentive and reason to require that businesses pay for polluting through a cap and trade system.
