Base 31 is so named as a nod to the rich history which this site represents, that is in its origins as No. 31 Bombing & Gunnery School, part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during World War II. As someone who has lived quite literally in its shadow for most of my life, I find it not only personally upsetting, but publicly disrespectful to move forward with the irresponsible plans this company proposes. This site is one of the few left in the world, and one of the best preserved in Canada. It has proudly stood the test of time, adapting to new uses, yes, but maintaining its original integrity and partial use, in the form of the air strip which has benefited our community and hundreds of air cadets over the years. Proposing removal of the air strip and to compromising the integrity of such an important historical site through overdevelopment is an unforgivable mar on the history of our community, and the memory of those who served here during the War.
Further, this development is completely unnecessary. It has been stated time and again that the only housing this community currently needs is affordable housing. The Base 31 proposal does not meet those needs, and will only further burden the already over-used services and transportation routes that serve our small community. Moving forward with this development would fundamentally change the shape and structure of our community, and it would mean destroying something unique and beautiful that sets us apart. Like many others, I strongly oppose this irresponsible and destructive proposal.
