Having lived in Northern Ontario for approximately 30 years I have seen how bus and train services have been negatively impacted by government decisions and the impact this has had on communities.
Buses need to be used for what they are good for, short distance or local transportation of people to local destinations or to connections to other means of transportation that are safer, more efficient, more effective and more environmentally responsible.
A change of policy or regulation will do nothing to change the existing lack of bus service in Northwestern Ontario. We need "MONEY", Tax Dollars to subsidize Bus Transportation the same way it is subsiidized in Southern Ontario. Why are we treated differently?
I suggest you empower the counties to make up local hubs. . . Simcoe county is probably leading the way in this . . . use them as a pilot. . . the idea is that all stakeholders private and public should be treated equally . . .
The Regional Municipality of Peel (Region of Peel) commends Ministry of Transportation, Ontario for undertaking this study. We are very much interested in improving transportation options for our residents and businesses.
This still does NOT address the issue of municipal-style public transit being done by the private sector, WITHOUT a contract. There are still numerous restrictions on providing this type of service.
The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is pleased to present comments to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) regarding its discussion paper, Intercity Bus Modernization: Creating Opportunities and Connecting Ontario Communities.
We understand the concept behind the removal of market entry controls of the intercity bus industry and the advantages of healthy competition. However this exercise should not be used to eliminate or phase out Ontario Northland's bus/coach services in Northern Ontario.
I would like to see better service across Northern Ontario. Currently, Greyhound is the only way to travel between Winnipeg and communities along highway 17 in Northern Ontario.

I strongly support the MTO's plan to remove regulatory barriers to entry in Ontario's intercity bus market.
