Public consultation took place for 30 days from August 2, 2023, to September 1, 2023. The Ministry of Mines has made the decision to finalize the current version of the Statement of Environmental Values. No changes to the text were made as a result of comments received.
Effects of consultation
The Ministry received two comments from individuals. All comments were considered by the Ministry. No changes were made to the Statement of Environmental Values as comments were either already addressed by the existing text or were out of scope of the Ministry’s mandate.

Proposal details
The Ministry of Mines (MINES) is proposing an updated Statement of Environmental Values (SEV). The updated SEV will replace the SEV of the former Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines as it relates to mining and will reflect the present structure of the ministries.
The Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993 (EBR) is unique legislation and an important tool in environmental protection. It establishes mechanisms to ensure the public is informed, engaged and consulted on matters of environmental significance, as well as to provide for government accountability in environmental decision-making.
The EBR requires that each ministry prescribed under the act develop and publish a SEV specific to the work of that ministry. A SEV is a ministry’s statement of environmental principles and a guidance document directing the minister and ministry staff as they make decisions regarding policies, acts, regulations and instruments that might affect the environment.
