Bulletin details
The Clean Water Act, 2006 (CWA) helps communities safeguard their drinking water sources from contamination and depletion. It achieves this by requiring the creation of collaborative, science-based watershed protection plans that are locally driven and focused on prevention.
Under Section 34 of the CWA, the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Authority has finalized amendments to the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe source protection area's source protection plan and the associated Nottawasaga Valley source protection area Assessment Report.
The completed amendments revised the protection zones for the Midhurst municipal drinking water system to reflect the addition of two new municipal wells in Midhurst Heights (Wells 1 and 2). These wells will supplement the six operational wells currently serving the Township of Springwater.
The South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Authority conducted consultations from October 9, 2025 to November 13, 2025. Pursuant to the Clean Water Act, 2006, they invited comments from:
- implementing bodies, including provincial government ministries and local municipalities
- members of the public and affected landowners
Comments submitted to the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Authority included a combination of minor administrative and editorial comments. None of these comments resulted in changes to the proposed updates.
The Minister has concluded that the comments the source protection authority received during consultation on the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe source protection plan and Nottawasaga Valley assessment report amendments have been adequately considered and addressed, and that the legislative and regulatory requirements under the Clean Water Act, 2006 relating to the amendments have been met.
These updates take effect upon this posting of the Minister’s approval on the Environmental Registry of Ontario. The approved updates to the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Plan and associated Nottawasaga Valley Source Protection Area Assessment Report are available on the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Authority’s website.
