I agree with the reduction of distances. There's no shortage of bears in Ontario. In many areas they are so populous they are a frequent nuisance. I have nothing against bears but I see no reason to make it more difficult to hunt them.

There are significantly more recreationalists such as bird watchers, hikers, dog walkers, photographers, geocachers, and families than hunters or outfitters in the province, many of whom are unfamiliar with hunting and firearm safety protocols who may be put at risk as a result of this move. Putting a bait is unfair, hypocritical. You feed an animal to trick him to better killed him. It is as shameful of calling a old person living in the street, holding a sandwich for him, and when he reach it with is hand you killed him. NO BAIT !

This is a great proposal due to safety concerns for both outfitters and hunters who have to travel through known bear territory with bait. It is also easier for handicapped hunters to access stands.

I support the proposed change but would like to see stiffer penalties to ensure the bait is cleaned up after the season. If we are bringing baits closer to public view, we need to ensure abandoned baits sites are not eyesores to the general public.

Many hunters access their bait sites on foot and must haul their bait and any animals harvested by hand. Older hunters such as my group would have difficulty accessing their bait sites if onerous restrictions were placed. Read more

I believe this change will be beneficial for both hunters and for bear management. I am in favour of changing the 200 m baiting restriction, to a 30 m baiting restriction from roadways and maintain public trails. Read more

I did not find any strong argument for this proposal to even be introduced. Importantly I can clearly predict car accidents and pets In arms way. Read more

Moving bait piles closer to publicly accessible roadways or trails increases the probability of negative encounters between wildlife (of all species who are potentially attracted to the bait piles) and non-hunters or outfitters.

I agree with the decision to modify the distance down to 30 meters. I feel this is sufficient distance to screen sites from the casual, non-hunting traveler and still be efficient use of the landscape. With proper hunting safety practices in place, this distance is adequate.

I ask that you keep the minimum distance for the placement of bait at 200 meters. Any significant reduction in distance will create potentially dangerous and unnecessary conflict between bears and humans which can then be used in future to wrongly implicate bears as being a ‘pest’. Read more

The reduction in setback of bear bait from 200 metres to 30 metres is irresponsible because it risks unsuspecting people passing close to where bears have been attracted to. Such a bear encounter could result in serious harm or death. Read more
