I oppose amendments that allow exemptions to archaeological and heritage protections. These safeguards preserve Indigenous culture, Ontario's shared history, and our collective identity. Reducing them under the banner of “provincial priorities” creates a slippery slope. Read more

Who does this help? Because it definitely doesn’t support working class Ontarians (i.e. archeologists who will be without jobs), nor does it help indigenous communities whose rights will be infringed upon. Read more

The recent changes outlined in Bill 5, which remove the requirement for archaeological assessments on certain infrastructure projects, are deeply concerning for several reasons. First and foremost, these changes undermine the critical relationships between the government and Indigenous communities. Read more

I work in consulting and frequently deal with archaeological assessments related to oil and gas and transmission line projects. The current system in place for dealing with heritage resources in Ontario is broken. Read more

I am writing to express my disdain regarding the Proposed Amendments to the Ontario Heritage Act, Bill 5. This legislation - Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025 - would be disastrous for the cultural and natural heritage of our province. Yes, we need more affordable housing. Read more

ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF ONTARIO IS NOT FOR SALE! This bill proposes putting profit before culture, history, and heritage, and is a blatant disregard to everything except profit. Shame on you for even considering it.

You promised you would consult the First Nations on these changes.... THIS IS NOT PROPER CONSULTATION AND THIS IS A BREACH OF OUR TREATY AND INHERENT RIGHTS TO PROTECT OUR ANCESTORS AND CULTURAL HERITAGE. WE, THE FIRST NATIONS WILL FIGHT THESE EXEMPTIONS. Read more

This bill is extremely short sighted. What exactly are the rules for getting an exemption from an archaeological assessment? The Ford government has left this vague, allowing for the abuse of exemptions for the highest bidders. Read more

The proposed changes to the Ontario Heritage Act are deeply concerning—not only for the preservation of the province’s rich and diverse cultural history but also for the damage they will do to relationships with Indigenous and First Nations communities. Read more

Regarding the proposed "Exemption for property", the risks of instituting such an exemption far outweigh the theoretical rewards. Northern Ontario in particular concerns me, as this is still a very understudied region archaeologically. Read more

It’s already passed First Reading, and as far as I know, First Nations weren’t consulted at all. It sounds like nobody was. These proposed amendments will seriously impact our Treaty Rights. Read more

I think the proposed amendments to the Ontario Heritage Act are absolutely abhorrent. It's essentially a free pass for development to happen on lands without any prior assessment to see if there is anything of value to the archaeological record. Read more
