This seems like an extremely poor political move with very little thought behind it. Currently, Ontario archaeology being done on the QEW has uncovered a Indigenous heritage site. Read more

Extremely disappointed by this new piece of legislation. This is a page out of the Trump handbook - using a crisis to unnecessarily steamroll over meaningful existing legislation and Indigenous rights. Read more

Proposed Bill 5, "Protecting Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act," is not just a misleading title, it’s a calculated smokescreen, in fact, the devil’s in the detail. Read more

I am deeply concerned by the changes proposed to the Ontario Heritage Act that would allow for properties to be exempted from conducting archaeological and built heritage assessments. Ontario's history is important and deserves preservation, which this change would prevent. Read more

Echos of Oka. Has the government considered how this will apply to unceded territory, or where there are contested land claims? If municipalities or Indigenous communities oppose the economic zones, will the Ford government spend millions of tax payer dollars fighting them in court? Read more

As a member of the Ontario Archaeological Society, I am appalled at the proposed amendments to the OHA. The archaeological record of Ontario remains an area of pride, an area of importance, and field of study that still very much requires due diligence on the part of developers. Read more

This bill is upsettingly unpolished and only serves to make the rich richer, leaving middle class Canadians behind while also disregarding our commitment to First Nations people. Read more

I am saddened by the proposal to further weaken the ability of people to have access to their heritage in Ontario and Canada. The prioritization of business and development, although important, need not happen at such a rate as to destroy artifacts and history. Read more

This proposes erasure of both environment and heritage in a way that seems eerily similar to our noisy neighbor to the south. How can Ontario tell Trump to get lost with one hand while committing acts like him with the other. For shame. Read more

While I understand the need to provide housing, improve transit etc, I can't help but feel that we will regret this fast track process as we pave over important historical and archeological sites and artifacts. Read more

If projects are exempted from archaeological assessment there will be no way to determine if exempted projects impact a major archaeological site or burial site until the projects have destroyed them. Read more

This is an absolutely disastrous proposal that is a direct affront to Truth and Reconciliation, public safety, and the environment at large. This proposal must not be allowed to pass, and the must not unethically and be deceptively be framed as an economic benefit towards Ontarians.

The proposed amendment for exemption for property from archaeological assessment open dangerous doors for commercial developers of luxury homes. Most of the locations required to house those most in need are in higher density areas that have already been developed and undergone assessments. Read more

There are several strong arguments against allowing developers to bypass archaeological assessments before developing land, as proposed in Ontario's Bill 5 (Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025): 1. Loss of Irreplaceable Cultural Heritage Read more
