Under the new proposed changes, Emerald Shiners, from the Great Lakes will no longer be available. Anglers demand this Species from this particular area for their winter fishing. Emerald Shiners from the Great lakes are irreplaceable and should not be taken from us. It's importance in social and economics are too great to be ignored.

The new proposal is in part to prevent Invasive Species but yet we have known for decades that they enter our waters through ships ballasts. It's a reality that Invasive Species are here to stay.

Under the present regulations, Harvesters must have their Bait inspected and certified by MNR and once the Bait is received at the shop it must then be sorted and inspected again.

It is our responsibility as Bait Dealers and Harvesters to make sure our Bait is clean before releasing it to the public and in my view is the best way to protect our waters, even if that would mean stiffer penalties for those who neglect.

It should also be mandatory to all Bait Shop owners to have a copy of "The Rom Field Guide To Freshwater Fishes of Ontario" to help them identify fish species.
