I am disheartened, disappointed and in disbelief that the provincial government is considering rolling back protections for vulnerable ecosystems and species under the guise of strengthening our economy. Doug Ford will do anything to allow the rich to get richer no matter the cost to the environment. Replacing the act with a much weaker one severely depletes protection of fragile habitats by creating a narrower definition of habitat and discretion based decision-making. This proposal also risks setting a dangerous precedent for bypassing meaningful Indigenous consultation, contravening constitutional obligations and the principles of reconciliation.
The natural world is in crisis. The province must be working to strengthen the Endangered Species Act and environmental priorities.
