The current plan for the Species Conservation Act 2025 do not meet the needs of environmental protection and conservation. How habitat is defined in the proposed plan is not up to date with current knowledge of ecosystem function. For both animal and vascular plant species it is well known that they require much more space than their current den or “critical root zone”. Animals need sufficient space to gather food and live healthy lifestyles, and vascular plant species often have symbiotic relationships with the surrounding root system, meaning that they require space with other plants to be healthy and sustain themselves and the surrounding ecosystem. The proposed plan makes it easier to harm endangered species and the ecosystems they are a part of by reducing the space they have to exist which is too small already. Please do not go forward with this, it would lead to much harm that cannot be taken back.
