As a concerned citizen, I strongly oppose Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025. This legislation is deeply dangerous because it guts environmental protections, especially for endangered species, and grants the government sweeping powers to override existing laws through the creation of “Special Economic Zones.” These zones would allow development projects to bypass environmental regulations and municipal bylaws without proper oversight or accountability, putting ecosystems and communities at serious risk.
Even more troubling is the Bill’s blatant disregard for Indigenous rights and the duty to consult. By fast-tracking industrial projects without requiring meaningful consultation or consent from First Nations, Bill 5 violates treaty obligations and undermines reconciliation efforts. This bill prioritizes short-term economic gains over environmental stewardship, democratic process, and Indigenous sovereignty — and must be stopped.
