Walker Construction should not be allowed to extract water from their pit 24 hours a day due to the significant potential impact on the Saugeen River and the surrounding water table. Continuous, around-the-clock water taking can lead to a drop in groundwater levels, which in turn affects the health and flow of the river system — especially during dry periods or times of low precipitation.
This can result in serious ecological consequences, including harm to fish habitats, wetlands, and other sensitive ecosystems that depend on stable groundwater inputs. It also raises concerns for nearby wells and residential water supplies, which may be compromised by excessive, prolonged extraction.
We need stronger environmental oversight and limits to ensure that short-term industrial convenience does not come at the cost of long-term environmental sustainability and community water security.
