Section 6.3.6 of the Draft Management Plan for FMZ11 is generally good in its consideration of the current state of the muskellunge fishery in FMZ11 and possible threats to it. The only additional recommendation that Muskies Canada Inc (MCI) would like to make at this time is the creation of a higher Minimum Size Limit regulation for Lake Nipissing and the French River. Where opportunities are listed in the Draft Plan, it is noted that “Current recreational angling practices for muskie represent minimal to no concern from a fisheries management perspective”. While this is true of muskie-angling specialists, it is important to note that these muskie-angling specialists still represent a small portion of angling pressure in FMZ11. Muskies are incidentally caught be anglers targetting other species, and large females included in this catch should be protected from harvest to improve the fishery.
