I am very aware of the plight of our Lake Trout populations. I believe that the better option is to introduce the size restriction but not to eliminate the month of September from the fishing season.
Restricting anglers to one (1) Lake Trout in excess of 40 cm will sufficiently protect the breeding female population without eliminating the month of September from the season.
Perhaps eliminating the wholesale Gill Netting of our lakes would do much more to protect our Lake Trout populations. One day of indiscriminate Gill Netting can cause more damage to the breeding female population than anglers can in the entire month of September (especially with a size restriction).
We have all heard of too many cases where Gill Nets have been left to drift unchecked destroying hundreds of fish which are just left to rot.
