The environmental degradation that these changes in policy will have repercussions forever. The loss of class a farmland in Southern Ontario will never be recovered and construction in these areas will contribute to urban sprawl. Housing for lower income needs to be in areas with existing public transit, without smart planning this new plan of the government will halt urban renewal and further contribute to the ghettoization of areas that should be revitalized with mixed income housing. Also, the damage increased development will cause on sensitive wetlands, especially along L Ont will cause increased pollution in our lake and put the native fish species further at risk. Increased runoff from roads will pollute creeks and rivers, as well as cause a higher rate of erosion and possible flooding.
The overriding of zoning for areas preserved for environmental reasons is short sighted and will only line the pockets of people with no interest in anything other than profit. As Canadians, we like to think that our environmental protect and planning process is superior to the rustbelts south of us, with sprawl and unsavory inner cities, but these current plans will create similar problems and the shortsightedness of these changes is utter deplorable and despicable.
