Giving away prime farm land for development would cost Ontarian long term in term of food and clean water security. Government should instead encourage landowners within the greenbelt to invest into agriculture to ensure food and clean water security for Ontarians for years to come. Agriculture business would be also profitable for those landowners if planned properly.
On the other hand there are many lands within the GTHA urban region yet to be developed. There is no reason to go after the Greenbelt until the vacant lands are utilized first.
Moreover Ontario has so many vacant area suitable for habitation outside GHTA and along the Windsor-Quebec corridor. There is no need to cramp Ontarians over a small area just to benefit certain class of people. Ontario government should focus instead on investing into building faster regional transit to further area and easing demand on the GHTA instead.
Also how using lands from Greenbelt helps house affordability without having suitable infrastructure to service those areas! People requiring house affordability would normally require affordable and transit and other infrastructure services. It would not make any sense to live in an affordable home in Pickering and still have to spend $$$ to commute back and forth to work and to access other facilities.
