It is inappropriate that guidelines were created by the commercial fur industry which is a conflict of interest. Trapping laws should prioritize animal welfare and should be informed by current, peer-reviewed science. The province should publish research findings so the public can make informed comments on this consultation.
Canada and Ontario must follow the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards so these changes to cables and snares should be prohibited in the province.
Killing and restraining snares should not be used to trap wildlife in Ontario as research has shown that they are inhumane and hurt animals other than those the traps were intended for. Many countries around the world have banned snares; the province follow suit and end the use of these devices. Farmers should also use non-lethal, predator friendly farming methods instead of trapping wildlife.
