On behalf of the Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen's Alliance and our membership of almost 5000 hunters, anglers and trappers, I wish to indicate our support for the proposed changes/amendments to the specifications for relaxing cable restraints used for trapping in Ontario (Ontario regulation 667/98).

In cooperation with the Ontario Fur Manager's Federation support of the proposed change, we agree that these changes will align regulations with research findings on recommended breakaway device ratings suitable for holding coyote yet maintaining design function to allow non-target species (e.g., livestock, non-target wildlife) to break the device and escape unharmed.

We also agree, that by reducing the minimum cable loop diameter, this will address concerns about pelt damage that have been identified by trappers. Both these amendments serve to ensure RCRs remain an effective tool for farmers and trappers.

This comment is being submitted to OMNRF by the Executive director of the
Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen's Alliance on behalf of our directors and membership.
