The following is a submission from the Schad Foundation regarding the Ministry’s Environmental Registry policy proposal 019-8618 posting in support of Expanding Protected Areas in Ontario (PPCRA) https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-8618.

Now as never before, Ontario needs to expand and protect its natural landscapes, features and biodiversity, as well as offer outdoor recreational and educational opportunities. From northern Ontario to near urban parklands, the Province and its citizens will benefit tremendously from additional protected areas.

For this reason, the Schad Foundation wishes to express its strong support for the proposal to expand areas regulated under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act (PPCRA) including many sites that originated from the Province’s Ontario’s Living Legacy Land Use Strategy (1999) and other sites that were acquired by the Province and/or conservation partners for provincial park additions.
We encourage the Ministry to move quickly to regulate the areas contained in this initial proposal and to continue this important work by bringing forward additional areas for PPCRA regulation, consistent with the Province’s landmark 2023 collaboration agreement with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

In advancing the regulation of these sites and expanding Ontario protected areas, the Ministry is helping to implement key provisions of the Ministry’s multi stakeholder Protected Areas Working Group to which the Schad Foundation was pleased to lead https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/60977/ontario-working-with-conservat….

As the Ministry advances the PPCRA regulation of these areas and as it works to prepare additional areas for regulation, the Schad Foundation would be pleased to continue to assist the Ministry in these important initiatives.

Yours truly,

Peter Kendall, C.M.
Executive Director
