There should be more advanced wood manufacturing facilities spread all around Ontario instead of concentrated in Southern Ontario.
The advanced wood manufacturing facilities should be located closer to the fibre supply. Each step in the refinement of the product (logs to lumber to mass timber) reduces the amount of wood fibre transported to its final location and, therefore, less greenhouse gases emitted.
More advanced, well-paying jobs in northern communities encourage more people to stay/move into those communities. Southern Ontario is getting too congested, and more people should be encouraged to move north, which will reinvigorate the forestry industry in Northern Ontario.
The diversification of forest-based jobs (besides the basic stick lumber and pulp mills) provides a healthier and more resilient forestry economy. For example, having a pulp mill close could result in surrounding sawmills closing as the sawmills have no other place for their sawmill waste. Having a variety of forestry/manufacturing operations can help absorb disruptions in the economy. A variety of forestry/manufacturing operations also provides other job opportunities for people laid off from the pulp mill closures instead of them having to move away to Southern Ontario.
More collaboration/investment should be made between researchers and manufacturers to promote innovation and quicker advancement to commercialization. Too many research projects are stuck in the lab, and more incentives should be available to bring these innovative solutions to commercialization, helping to diversify the forestry industry.
